Working on Solutions for our Community

Los Osos residents and visitors to the area quickly come to appreciate the special quality of life the area has to offer--whether it's the active outdoor lifestyle, the slow-paced small-town feel, the clean coastal air, the affordability, or the unmatched beauty and biodiversity of its setting along Morro Bay National Estuary. What many people don't realize is that the area's quality of life relies on two fragile natural resources facing increasing threats to their survival.

The Los Osos Valley Water Basin, the area's sole source of water, is threatened by serious seawater intrusion from many years of overdraft.  This threat is made worse by reduced rainfall over 15 years, by warmer temperatures, and by rising sea levels from climate change. The many native plant and animal species in the area are also impacted by climate change and by reduced groundwater flows from the Basin.  Both of these resources are also facing significant impacts from County efforts underway to add 30% more development over the Basin.

To avoid harm or loss of these irreplaceable resources, water and land-use policies and decision-making must take a precautionary long-term view that prioritizes their health and sustainability. The Los Osos Sustainability Group (LOSG) is working to raise awareness of the impacts to these resources and the actions residents and visitors can take to protect, preserve and restore them.  We encourage community members and visitors to join our efforts by becoming supporting members.
